School Fees

These are similar to Impact Fees in that each new project, in theory, produces more impact on public services including schools.  Regardless of whether or not you have children, the construction of another house (that you may sell to someone else at some point) produces the obvious possibility of more children attending the school(s) in your particular district.

These fees currently run in the $1.50 to $2.75 per square foot range and are typically due just prior to your permit being issued.  Your local jurisdiction may take care of this paperwork in-house, or may give you a form that you must take to your local school district office, pay the required fees, and then return the completed form, indicating you have paid the fees, to the building department.

There are sometimes waivers granted for addition projects of less than 500 square feet.  But my advice to clients, given the larger picture of construction costs, is not to pay this 500 square foot limit too much attention.  Building or adding on to your house should really be considered with much more long-range thinking in mind.
