Project Valuation

This is similar to just an estimate of the construction costs of your project, but is generally limited to just those aspects of the project that will need to be inspected by the building inspector.  For example, building inspectors do not inspect things like installation of countertops, carpet, other finished flooring, cabinets, etc., that do not pertain directly to building safety.  And they do not base their inspections on whether you have expensive granite countertops or just cheap Formica ones, and the cost of these finish materials are a big part of the total costs.

Sometimes your local jurisdiction will have a cost-per-square-foot figure you (or they) can use for this calculation.  Your contractor or architect may also be able to assist with this calculation.  Also, some jurisdictions may provide you with a fee estimate based on your preliminary plans.  Either way, they should provide you with an itemized list specifying exactly how these fees are calculated.
