Elevations

An elevation is also really just another type of section.  It is a horizontal projection of each side of a building that can then be drawn to scale.  Note that a perspective drawing cannot really be drawn to "scale", that is you can't really measure anything from it.  This is why elevations can be helpful as part of the instructions of how to execute the design.

But one thing I try to relate to most clients, is that because an elevation is just an abstraction, it is not the way we see things in the real world.  I think sometimes people can get overly concerned with this lining up with that, etc. and other issues that you can really only see in the elevations, and not in real life.  It is of course, somewhat natural to concentrate on these drawings because they are sort of the "pretty picture" part of the plans.  But they aren't always the best way to show how a building actually looks in 3 dimensions.
