Foundation & Floor Framing Plans

If the foundation and floor framing for the first floor are fairly simple, both of these can often be shown in one combined drawing.  If they are more complex, as on a hillside with multiple levels, etc. , you may need to have separate foundation plans and floor framing plans.  For floors above the first floor, you would just show the floor framing.  If the first floor is a concrete slab (which is normally less expensive on a flat site), then you would just show the footings and the slab.

Personally, I do not use dimensions on these drawings, although some do.  I prefer to keep all of the dimensions on the floor plans only, as I think this lessens the chances of inconsistencies.  The floor plans should provide the one "master" location for all the dimensions.

And of course, concrete slabs and wood floor framing are just the most common ways in which most houses (as well as a large portion of commercial buildings) are built.  There are all kinds of other structural systems you can use as well.
