Building Codes

These are the rules and specifications that govern minimum standards for construction for all buildings within the state (other than federally owned lands such as military bases, etc.) As of January 2008, California, which has had its own building code separate (although based on) the Uniform Building Code, adopted a new building code based on the International Building Code (IBC)The California Building Code (CBC) tends to be more restrictive in the ways that it is different from the IBC;

Currently, the full text of these codes can cost several hundred dollars, even in an electronic format, but portions of these codes may be published, and available for free, from your local building department.

Also, each jurisdiction may have slightly different sets of codes that it has officially adopted so check with your local jurisdiction on that.  These will be the "Applicable Codes" for your project.
